Clinical Position Descriptions

Position Overview:
The Flight Nurse provides intensive care level life support services to critically ill and/or injured patients as part of an integrated air transport team.

Environmental and Mechanical Considerations:
Flight Nurses deliver critical care services under the stresses of flight, with frequent exposure to blood/body fluids, in sometimes hazardous conditions, near moving mechanical parts and within high noise environments. Training and resources are available to mitigate risk as appropriate, but the responsibility to utilize those devices falls to the individual.

Minimum Required Education Level:
Completion of an accredited certificate or associate’s degree in a registered nursing program

Preferred Education Level:
Completion of an accredited bachelor’s or master’s degree program in nursing, business or related field

Required Previous Experience:
Three years or more experience as a registered nurse in the emergency and/or adult critical care environments

Required Certifications and/or Registrations: 

  • Active, Non-Restricted Registered Nursing License in West Virginia or a compact state
  • Driver’s License in good standing and acceptable Motor Vehicle Record history as described within the company’s Driver Acceptability standards
  • West Virginia Mobile Critical Care Nurse Certification
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support Provider Certification
  • Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support Provider Certification or International Trauma Life Support Provider Certification or Trauma Nurse Core Curriculum Certification
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support Certification
  • Pediatric Emergencies for Pre-Hospital Professionals Certification or Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course Neonatal Resuscitation Program Certification
  • Completion of WV EMT-Basic Recertification Program or Equivalent NIMS Training IS 100, 200, 700, 800 and Hazardous Materials

Post-Hire Certifications and/or Registrations:

  • Active, Non-Restricted Registered Nursing License in West Virginia or appropriate states based on assigned work location
  • Satisfactory completion of HealthNet Aeromedical Services Initial Flight Team Member Orientation Program
  • Completion of Specialty RN Certification (CFRN) within two years of hire

Position Specific Accountabilities: 

  • Attends and actively participates in pre-mission briefings and debriefings.
  • Assists pilot as requested to enhance safety of self and others.
  • Completes clinical and operational functions in a safe manner, utilizing all available resources, training and judgment.
  • Performs advanced skills as permitted by applicable regulations and the HealthNet Aeromedical Services Medical Director.
  • Immediately acts on safety concerns and hazardous conditions.
  • In a timely manner, reports safety concerns and hazardous conditions.
  • Effectively completes complex clinical patient assessments.
  • Provides patient stabilization using established clinical care guidelines and skill set.
  • Before, during and after flight operations, liaisons with peers and other professionals to ensure quality delivery of care and operational safety.
  • Ability to select, check and maintain, and operate equipment/supplies found on an aircraft.
  • Possesses basic computer skills with flexibility to utilize new software/hardware sets.
  • Maintains currency of all required licenses, certifications and continuing education programs.
  • Completes all required clinical, operational and performance improvement documentation.
  • Communicates educational needs to the leadership team.
  • Collects statistical data as required.
  • Participates in committee and marketing/outreach activities as required.
  • Follows standards of conduct and procedures developed by HealthNet Aeromedical Services.
  • Follows standards developed by appropriate governmental bodies.
  • Willingness to work beyond the end of scheduled shift, on unscheduled days and at any base location as required allowing for service availability.
  • Willingness to complete patient transports by ground ambulance as required and directed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by members of the HealthNet Aeromedical Services leadership team.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to lift, push, pull and transfer patients of high weights with limited resources
  • Ability to twist upper body while moving patients and/or equipment
  • Ability to stand, walk, climb, balance, reach, stoop, bend, crawl and crouch for extended time periods
  • Ability to adapt to rapidly changing and potentially extreme environmental conditions
  • Ability to smell and identify odors
  • Ability to use close, distant and peripheral vision, depth perception, and visual focus
  • Ability to clearly hear and interpret voice, two-way radio and telephone communication
  • Ability to successfully complete initial and recurrent physical examination including body weight
  • Ability to successfully complete initial and recurrent physical agility test

Post-Hire/On-Going Personal Assessments: 

  • Aviation safety assessment
  • Post-crash survival knowledge assessment
  • Annual clinical competency evaluation
  • Quarterly weigh-in demonstrating weight below 220 lbs.
  • Randomized drug and alcohol usage testing

Completion of an accredited certificate or associate’s degree paramedic program

Preferred Education Level:
Completion of an accredited bachelor’s or master’s degree program in emergency medical technology, business or related field

Required Previous Experience:
Three years or more experience as a paramedic in a high-volume 911 provider environment

Required Certifications and/or Registrations: 

  • Active, Non-Restricted Paramedic License and/or Certificate in West Virginia or a national registry
  • Driver’s License in good standing and acceptable Motor Vehicle Record history as described within the company’s Driver Acceptability standards
  • West Virginia Mobile Critical Care Paramedic Certification

Position Overview: 

The Continuous Improvement Specialist (CIS) provides clinical and operational reviews of patient encounters for HealthNet Aeromedical Services or HealthTeam Critical Care Transport, with a focus on those of contracted organizations (for example: Minnie Hamilton, Waye County, Marshall County). And, in collaboration with the Chief Medical Officer, VP/ Chief Operating Officer and Director of Education, makes recommendations for remediation and/or improvements in operations and clinical standards of practice. The CIS, at the request of the Continuous Improvement Manager, provides education outreach opportunities to the HealthNet Aeromedical Services customer base. The CIS remains a tactile ground team member, meeting all standards set forth in the appropriate position description. The position responsibilities are comprised of approximately 16 to 20 hours per week in administrative functions and approximately 24 hours per week as a tactile ground team member. Alternatively, the successful candidate can remain in a part-time regular status without the tactile ground team component. 

 

Environmental and Mechanical Considerations: 

While serving in an office or classroom setting or Patient Simulation Laboratory, the CIS generally conducts his/her activities in a controlled office environment. Limited exposure to electrical and mechanical hazards may exist in this environment. While serving in a clinical or observational capacity at a base location, the CIS delivers emergency services under the stresses of ground transport, with frequent exposure to blood/body fluids, in sometimes hazardous conditions, near moving mechanical parts and within high noise environments. Training and resources are available to mitigate risk as appropriate, but the responsibility to utilize those devices falls to the individual. 

 

Minimum Required Educational Level: 

Completion of an associate degree in paramedic science, nursing or related field of study from an accredited institution 

 

Preferred Educational Level: 

Completion of a bachelor’s degree in paramedic science, nursing or related field of study from an accredited institution 

 

Required Previous Experience: 

Previous experience with clinical or quality improvement in a nursing or EMS environment, policy development and instructor status with emphasis on outreach education 

 

Preferred Previous Experience: 

Three or more years of experience in clinical or quality improvement, policy development and course coordination in outreach education 

 

Required Certifications and/or Registrations: 

Current unrestricted WVOEMS Paramedic or Nurse credentials

Instructor status in AHA disciplines, Trauma Nurse Core Course, or one NAEMT discipline 

 

Post-Hire Certifications and/or Registrations: 

It is encouraged that ground team members who hold the title of CIS, obtain certification as a Certified Transport Registered Nurse (CTRN) or Critical Care Paramedic- Certified (CCP-C) as appropriate.

Annual motor vehicle operator report 

Annual competency assessment 

 

Position Specific Accountabilities:  

Maintains all requirements and fulfills all essential functions of a ground team member

Is proactive in participating and instructing in educational outreach programs, including but not limited to Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC), all American Heart Association (AHA) disciplines, and National Association of EMT’s (NAEMT) courses 

Ensures that clinical care documentation complies with standards set forth by HealthNet Aeromedical Services’ expectations and those established by the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Services (CAMTS) and governmental agencies as appropriate.

Holds seat on the Education Committee and completes assignments as requested 

Interfaces with the Continuous Improvement Manager, Chief Medical Officer, and the Director of Education in the development and implementation of simulation scenarios for initial, recurrent, and remedial education experiences as indicated 

Collaborates with the Continuous Improvement Manager, Medical Director, VP/ Chief Operating Officer and Director of Education to make recommendations for clinical remediation and/or improvements in clinical standards of practice 

Interfaces with Corporate Communications Manager and Business Development Coordinators in the development and implementation of clinical and educational outreach services to customers 

Notifies the Continuous Improvement Manager of customer concerns regarding clinical matters

Promptly processes and reports findings related to medical team performance 

Utilizing standardized content, completes utilization review and determination of appropriateness for all transports 

Assists with research including data collection and report writing 

In partnership with leaders and other organizations as required, develops patient care guidelines, policies and procedures 

Liaisons with partner organizations on issues related to continuous improvement
